Nuclear evacuation zone may be expanded

Japan's top government spokesman has suggested that an additional evacuation order may be issued for residents living in areas up to more than 30 kilometers from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Residents within 20 kilometers of the plant have been evacuated, while those living between 20 and 30 kilometers have been advised to stay indoors.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told reporters on Thursday that the government is examining the standards by which evacuation orders will be given, based on the cumulative exposure to radiation in the area.

He also refered to the evacuees' request to temporarily return to their homes within the 20-kilometer exclusion zone to gather valuables and necessities on April 11th.

Edano said it would be difficult to realize this on the day marking exactly one month after the disaster, considering the current situation at the plant.

He said that the residents would have to wear protective clothing and carry dosimeters when they return to their homes, just as Self-Defense personnel and police officers are doing in the area.

Edano said the government wants to draw up an outline within a month for the residents' temporary return.
